To use a live stream from ScaleEngine in Instant TV Channel, you'll need to be sure to set the StreamFormat parameter to "hls", and set the Live parameter to "True".

How it works:
This is the original, self-managed cloud playout solution. We developed this idea in 2012, and were the first CDN to offer a channel system. You upload your video clips to us, add them to playlists and create streams in our control panel. Embed a player on either a flash-enabled or HLS-enabled screen and see your clips stream seamlessly in the order you specified! Make changes, and see them applied immediately! Reload from any position in the list! Drag and drop clip ordering, with simple deletion and addition. Get the highest quality VOD in a direct stream from a true video CDN. Change your streams when you want to, not just when it's possible.

Channel service FAQ

Q: How do I create a stream?

A: Upload your vod to us, and arrange it in our control panel in the order you want. It streams out live, direct from the CDN. Simple and very high quality, as high resolution as your encoding.

Q: Can I go live?

A: Sure. Just schedule in a live stream. Broadcast live for as long as you want. The stream falls back to the VOD loop when you stop the encoder.

Q: Can I have different playlists for different days and times?

A: Yes. You could set up different lists by hour, or day. They will kick in at the scheduled time on your streams.

Q: Is there an API? I want to use my front end website to handle stream management and playback.

A: We have a documented API for the channel service. Your site can manage any application for this system. Demo reels for actors, Point Of Sale video displays, Sign Installations, or OTT TV.

Q: Why can't I upload through your website?

A: We will be adding this feature. However, most professional video is stored on servers, and should be transferred using site to site protocols, for speed and reliability. You can use rsync or ftp. We are also the only CDN to give you the option to work in a Unix shell account. We have S3 tools installed to pull your content directly from Amazon if you are migrating from Cloudfront. If you need to dump your files from Brightcove we have a script that works with their API. We can accomodate most transfer in requests, including hard disk delivery.

Q: What are the file types I can use?

A: The mp4 format is the best format for quality and multi-platform viewing, both in terms of compression and viewing quality. You can stream very high-quality HD video to your viewers, assuming they have sufficient bandwidth to buffer and view the stream. Using mp4 also ensures that your channel will play in an HLS stream for Apple TV, Roku, and most modern mobiles. We also allow m4v, and for audio channels, mp3 files.

Q: Why do you recommend I strip metadata?

A: We don't anymore, this is now an advanced feature. Metadata used to cause a duration to be shown in some flash players, which stopped the stream playback. We have not seen that this is a problem for HLS streaming or for JW Player 7, so you can leave metadata on in these cases.

Q: I need to scale my stream to many locations, or to thousands of simultaneous viewers

We provide worldwide edge delivery of your channel stream, using our instant geographic viewer routing system.

Q: I need hotlink protection, or SEVU.

A: Both SEVU and hotlink protection work. Channels are simply live streams, with a VOD playlist as the ingest, instead of an incoming stream.

Q: Can I add in a livestream to my usual repeated VOD?

A: This feature is popular. Stream live at any time, and fall back to a vod list around your live shows.

Q: Can I use this for my Roku Channel hosting? Does it transition without dropping viewers or resetting?

A: Your HLS streams update seamlessly. Our playout system powers lots of Roku channels.

Q: Can I go live immediately?

A: You can reload your channel in place and go live instantly.

Q: Can I record the live stream too?

A: This feature is available. Define the recording type you want when you create the live stream.

Q: Can I show my viewers what is currently playing?

A: yh... Use our API example.
